What is Beta Testing?

The software has reached "beta" stage when it is operating with most of its functionality, and is ready for user feedback.

Software which is in "beta" is still currently in development. Beta software is typically released to select public users to allow them to scrutinise the product and help to locate problems which can be solved before the official release. Users who are interested in assisting in this testing process can get access to the beta version of our development products by joining the CIM NET Beta Test Program.

Beta tests enable the software to be tested in customer environments, giving users the opportunity to exercise the software, find errors, and correct them before a product is released. Beta testers are given instructions on what features to exercise in the software. The developer records, tracks, and addresses reported bugs.

The main objective of beta testing is to show with a high level of confidence that the software application meets the acceptance criteria: function, performance, usability, features, and capabilities.

The developer is expected to thoroughly test software for both functionality and usability before submitting it to the contractor for final acceptance testing.

Software testing tests the software itself, but it also tests documentation, operator or user interfaces, and reports. What is also indirectly tested are the development team, the technical and project management, the application development tools, and the software development rules and guidelines. In sum, much more is tested than just the software product itself.

The beta testers will need to check the technical accuracy of the software, and will need to use it with their own computer setups, data and workflows to make sure that the software will perform as desired in their own environments.
